  • Research Topic - Reliability of electrified aircraft propulsion systems

What is your research topic and what is it about?

The insulation of the stator winding is one of the components of an electric machine that limits its lifetime, significantly influencing the reliability of the drive system. During operation, it is exposed to thermal, electrical, ambient and mechanical stresses (TEAM), either individually or in combination. Therefore, the design of the stator winding insulation must be calculated and analysed specifically in advance.

In addition, the design of the stator winding insulation affects the copper fill factor in the stator slot, which in turn influences the performance and thermal behaviour of electric machines. The research aims to address the trade-off between efficiency, power density and reliability. The focus is on developing new methodologies for predicting and evaluating this trade-off.

    Why is your topic relevant?

In order to achieve climate-friendly aviation, highly utilised electric machines are necessary for future electrified aircraft propulsion. This means that high power density and efficiency are necessary in order to reduce energy consumption and make the most of the available space. To ensure the aviation sector's high safety standards, the focus is on the reliability of electric drives, their lifetime, and their failure resilience. This affects both the operational safety of aircraft engines and maintenance strategies.
