Power Electronics I

Lecture + Exercise + Laboratory

This course is offered in German.

Learning objective:

The module provides basic knowledge of the functional principles, components and circuits of power electronics. After successful completion of the course, students will be able to

  • describe structure and properties of power semiconductors,
  • select and dimension active and passive components appropriately for the respective application,
  • characterise and calculate line-commutated power converters and their operating behaviour as well as their mains interaction,
  • configure and calculate simple self-commutated power converters (DC choppers),
  • explain three-phase inverters and calculate them for the respective application,
  • configure simple systems consisting of several power converters.

Contents:

Power electronics (LE) for energy conversion with high efficiency, fields of application of LE, components of LE, line-commutated rectifiers, mains interaction, DC choppers, three-phase voltage source inverters, compound power converters and inverters.

Previous Knowledge:

Fundamentals of electrical engineering (required), fundamentals of semiconductor engineering (recommended)
