Ethical Aspects of the Engineering Profession

Lecture

This course is offered in German.

Students acquire skills in dealing with ethical and interdisciplinary issues and in classifying technologies in socio-technical contexts. They gain a deeper understanding of the social significance of engineering sciences by means of texts and case studies from different fields. Students also learn how to present, discuss and jointly evaluate work results. In addition to developing their assertiveness and discussion skills, the course also improves students’ reading skills.

The seminar covers fundamental approaches and methods of interdisciplinary, applied ethics. Ethical, social and cultural dimensions of engineering and questions of responsibility will be discussed and evaluated on the basis of texts and case studies. The prerequisite is a willingness to read texts and actively participate in discussions. Students will have the opportunity to research topics, suggest their own topics and thus actively shape the seminar. The seminar group meets for two hours every two weeks. The course achievement consists of preparing, conducting and moderating the respective meeting.
