Battery-electric multiple units have been helping to replace diesel multiple units since December 2023 at the latest, thereby reducing CO₂ emissions from rail transport. This presentation aims to answer the following questions:
• Why, and why now?
• What does the powertrain of a battery-electric multiple unit look like?
• How do the multiple unit, infrastructure and timetable interact?
